Button examines the possible solutions for helicopter problems. According to Preston Martin, an aerodynamicist in the US Army's Aeroflightdynamics Directorate, pilot can feel the phenomenon rotor roughness. When a helicopter reaches this point in flight, the pilot must reduce speed. Martin heads the Army's research into active flow control devices at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton VA. These devices can take a variety of experimental forms, from electrically powered air blowers on flight surfaces to patterns of holes for suctioning and blowing air or circuits to heat air into plasma. The job of Martin's team is to weigh the technical trade offs of each concept and figure out which one would be best for keeping the airflow from separating.
