While the Institute of Transportation Engineers serve the public with a common goal -- providing a safe and efficient transportation system meeting the needs of all users -- there are different paths to get them there. The author understands that all too well, along with the pitfalls that await them when they fail to understand their ultimate "client," the public. On projects small and large, local and regional, public agency or private sector generated, they are called upon to plan, design, implement, operate, and maintain elements of the transportation system. For peer reviewers, either public or private, please remember that the people whose work you are reviewing applied some level of engineering judgement or interpretation of data or guidelines in the development of a plan or study.
