Autonomous Vehicle (AV) technologies have been advancing at a significant rate. Many professionals across a broad field of backgrounds have contributed greatly to the advances currently in place. There is an increasing abundance of discussion as well as debate regarding the evolutionary development of AV technologies. The purpose of this paper is to discuss how these technologies will change the traditional rules of traffic flow theory historically used by traffic engineering professionals during the past several decades as well as discuss the implications of these changes on urban transportation system capabilities.
