A new three-speed automatic transmission has been designed and developed for overseas vehicles. A unique arrangement of a Ravigneaux gearset, torque converter, three plate clutches, overrunning clutch, and a band employs new manufacturing techniques. The result is a low cost, lightweight transmission capable of covering a wide range of engine sizes. The requirements of the new transmission were: at least three speeds, flexibility to cover an engine range from 4 cyl, 66 cu in. to 308 cu in. V-8, flexibility for installation in left and right drive vehicles, small package size, minimum weight, low cost, and interchangeability of major components. This paper describes the design and manufacture of this new three-speed transmission.
