The present paper outlines some important aspects of the approach to develop high performance naturally aspirated engines. With reference to the Lamborghini V12 engine, first we discuss the optimization of the charge efficiency in the whole engine operating conditions, obtainable by a variable geometry intake system coupled with a variable valve timing system. Then the issue of the electronic engine management is considered, highlighting how it is important for a high performance engine manufacturer to have a direct control of the engine management systems and relevant software algorithms. Also the “in-vehicle” integration must be considered as a main target: for example the unconventional engine cooling here presented and the best acceleration performance obtained by matching of engine control and transmission control. Emphasis is then put on the exhaust emissions, OBD and noise control, which have to be taken into account since the early stage of the engine development: these issues, together with the performance issue, have to be part of the same development program.
