A new integrated circuit has been developed by National Semiconductor that is intended for multiplexed wiring applications with data rates up to 10Kbits/sec.This paper describes the integrated circuit, the communications protocol adopted, methods of system expansion and interfacing to J1850 multiplexed wiring networks. Finally the paper discusses the architecture of a J1850 network interface chip
