Slippery runway pavement surfaces present a serious loss to aircraft tire traction and directional control during landing operations. Several agencies in the federal government and aviation community are combining their efforts toward providing pavement surfaces that will support safe aircraft tire traction in all adverse weather conditions. This paper discusses some of the methods used in construction and maintenance of airport pavement surfaces and the ongoing research efforts to solve the slippery runway pavement problem.
