The temperature range of conventional thermocouples has been extended to previously unattainable limits by the pulse themocouple system described here. This system, consisting of thermocouple, coolant, and computer, operates on a cyclic principle which allows intermittent cooling of the thermocouple before it reaches a temperature high enough to damage materials. It has the advantages of probe simplicity and ability to operate in severe environments of high temperature, gas loads, and vibrations. Operation, system components, performance, and typical applications are given detailed treatment.
