For complex systems design, models at various levels of scope/resolution are indispensable. Detailed models help in understanding phenomena in the messy real world away from the control of the laboratory. They are necessary for achieving realism in virtual simulations where new designs must be tested under conditions as near as possible to what they will experience in reality. A simulation system that supports synthetic environments is under development and will be reviewed.
