MEASUREMENT of temperatures of gases at very high temperatures has become increasingly important with the development of gas turbines and guided missiles. To measure these temperatures accurately is not a simple matter, however, because as temperatures of 1000 F and velocities of 2000 fps and more are reached, velocity, radiation, and conduction errors become appreciable.High-temperature probes have been designed that reduce these errors, but they do not eliminate them. Thus, it becomes desirable to know the limitations of the different types of probes available.Presented here are data that should be useful to the engineer in selecting probes and estimating their errors under various conditions.
