The various aspects of design criteria are discussed in this paper. These criteria include the concepts of environments, strengths, strength-environment separation factors, and the allocation of unreliability values to the elements of a system. Possible design procedures which result from three different types of testing are discussed. The various design criteria concepts as well as the techniques for evaluating reliability are illustrated in the design of a mechanical element.
