A new machine and process for rapid hard finish grinding of large non-generated bevel and hypoid gears and their mating pinions is described. A method for improved tooth contact using fourth order curvature control is presented. The process is most suitable for medium to small lot size production. A specially designed flaring cup shaped wheel is used for the gear member to enable the non-generated profile to be ground without burning.
