The paper presents the development of a naturally aspirated direct injection diesel engine for multi utility vehicles with a cam driven mechanical fuel injection pump to meet stringent Bharat Stage III norms (akin to Euro III norms). The paper describes the cost effective techniques adopted for the development of a 3 liter DI engine used for multi utility vehicle applications. Inherent design architecture of engine not being contemporary, plus need to achieve targets without turbo charging, intercooling or electronic common rail injection system to keep low product cost, posed major development challenge.Extensive experimental studies have been conducted to evaluate the effect of nozzle configuration, part load retardation, needle tip protrusion, catalytic converter, variable EGR and compression ratio on mass emission of the vehicle. Interaction of swirl and EGR strategy governed through electronic EGR controller has been studied in depth to reach targeted emission norms. Target is accomplished with effective usage of optimized FIE, progressive EGR system control strategy, oxidation catalytic converter and improved intake swirl. Vehicles were successfully homologated for Bharat Stage III norms (BS III).
