Adjusting repair estimates for vehicles involved in collisions always presents some measure of discontent among many vehicle owners. There is usually wide variation between the repairer's and adjuster's estimates. In some countries, Adjusters are involved in a repetitive process of computing and adjusting estimates of similar make and model vehicles simply by deliberating on each item in the estimate. If for every make and model vehicle that drives off the assembly line, a set of tables or charts is compiled to enable estimators to compute repair costs, by using one very simple mathematical equation, and without listing every affected part or component, it would go a long way in alleviating some of the discontentment among stake holders in the industry. Collision Deformation Classification (CDC) is an excellent tool for gathering vehicle damage information in Accident Reconstruction exercises. This paper concerns design of a procedure that aims at applying CDC to compute a value called ‘Extent of Collision Damage’ (ECD), mainly for the benefit of Insurers, vehicle owners and Adjusters.
