ENEL has developped a very compact experimental 80 kV power supply, using high frequency SMPS technology. The power supply has been designed to fulfill the requirements of large scale electrostatic precipitators for flue gas clean up, which demands high performance, high voltage dc sources to produce the necessary corona ionization and to achieve particle collection. The main advantages of the design are the light weight and the high power density which make this power supply very attractive in respect of conventional ones. The adoption of high switching frequencies allows a very precise control of the corona, permitting high ionizations with minimum incidence of discharge phenomena. This fact leads to an improvement of particulate collection efficiency.Further improvements are obtained with the adoption of a sophisticated control strategy, implemented through the extensive use of microprocessor control.
