Existing and planned Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resources Board (CARB) emission regulations are powerful driving forces for a change to the alternative fuels for the heavy-duty vehicles. Although battery powered electric vehicle technology is not new, the application of this technology to heavy-duty vehicles is in the early commercialization stages. The battery powered electric buses have just started to gain recognition in the field of alternative fuels. The current state of technology allows these buses to fill demand for clean vehicles in a wide range of applications. With technological advances in battery development and low weight materials, the future for electric buses appears bright.
