This paper presents a broad review of the whole subject of variable valve timing applied to both gasoline and diesel engines, including related technology such as the use of supplementary valves in the intake ports or manifolds. The current motivation to provide variable valve timing and the state of development of mechanisms to achieve it are discussed, followed by a prediction of possible future trends.
