Gray cast iron as an automotive cylinder block material is discussed in this paper. The advantages of this material over aluminum are detailed in terms of cost, wear resistance, strain-stress tolerance, castability, corrosion resistance in aqueous coolant systems, damping characteristics, and commercial considerations. The future of gray iron for cylinder blocks is also reviewed.
