Engine oils, gear lubricants and lubricant sets were compared on fuel economy in cold start, short trip, cold weather service using full-size and compact cars. Significant improvements in fuel economy were shown through lubricant selection. The effect of other variables was identified. Ambient temperature effects on fuel economy were quantified.
