For the 1988 model year General Motors will introduce a new 2.3L, four cylinder, 16 valve engine named the “Quad 4”. This engine features high specific power, low mechanical and thermal losses, precision manufacturing processes, and outstanding reliability.This paper describes the organizational and operating philosophies including simultaneous engineering and supplier source selection and development under which this engine was designed, processed, validated, and manufactured.Also described are the design features and manufacturing techniques utilized to reach the program objectives.
