A method to calculate beam cross section properties from only a profile description of the beam cross section is described. Cross section properties are formulated in terms of line integrals involving only boundary variables. The boundary element method is then introduced to solve Laplace's and Poisson's equations for these boundary variables. Algorithms are proposed which automatically create accurate boundary element models from the cross section profile.
