Diesel engine noise can be reduced by modifying the combustion pressure-time history and the engine structure. This paper deals with the correlation between combustion excitation level and noise, and the effects of speed, timing, load, compression ratio, and combustion system configuration on combustion excitation.Engine structural modifications including increased stiffness, isolation, and damping are considered. The effects on noise and vibration are presented for increased block stiffness and isolation and damping of various engine covers.
