This paper describes the program objectives of the TPE331-12 engine and outlines how these objectives were met with a combination of proven design features from the TPE331-10 engine, from which the TPE331-12 is derived, and with the advanced technology of the new, recently certified TPE331-14 engine. The Garrett Turbine Engine Company (GTEC) TPE331-12 turboprop engine was conceived as an uprated version of the existing TPE331-10 model. In 1981, it became apparent that a commercial interest existed for the uprated −10 engine if it could offer at least a 10 percent gain in thermodynamic shaft horsepower with no specific fuel consumption (SFC) penalty. This paper will describe how these improvements were achieved.
