This paper describes the use of the two microphones Acoustic Intensity Method of obtaining accurate measurement of over-all sound power of large wheel loaders. This system is in operation, within a factory environment, at the Caterpillar Aurora Plant. Its primary purpose is to assure that specified vehicle sound limits are being maintained. The system also provides diagnostic opportunities if units fail the validation test.
