Reduction of diesel engine noise in a cost-effective manner requires quantitative identification of the noise levels radiated by the different engine surfaces. The source identification enclosure technique and test variation effects are discussed. In addition, the techniques of optimum mass and stiffness distribution, shielding, damping and isolation are discussed and results of typical treatments are shown.
