The cost of any High Speed Guided Ground Transportation system is dominated by guideway construction cost, and guideway maintenance can be a substantial component of operating cost. In order to lower HSGGT cost it is imperative to find the simplest and most reliable guideway that meets the system needs. This paper discusses the possibility of using relatively low cost, narrow beam guideways for high speed maglev applications. The approach is relevant to both EMS and EDS systems as now designed, and also to some alternative designs which are discussed.
