There has always been a great deal of misconception about the development of hypoid and spiral bevel contact patterns. Certain design criteria, no load and loaded contact pattern checks, test machine comparisons, and simple deflection tests can be performed quickly to give an idea if the initial contact pattern development is correct. Development time can be shortened and the correct contact pattern can be determined before the long term field and dynamometer testing starts.
