The technique used at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, George C. Marshall Space Flight Center for digital preprocessing of vibration data is described. Preprocessing of vibration data results in “quick look” oscillograms for use by vibration analysts in selecting time periods for digital analysis, as well as conversion of raw analog data to digital form. Discussion is limited to Saturn launch vehicle vibration data and the processes involved in preparing these data for digital analysis. Some of the preprocessing problems that have been experienced during the Random Vibration Analysis Program (RAVAN) are presented, along with criteria for rejecting questionable data.
