Two new sensors which combine sensing approaches which minimize environmental sensitivity with packaging capable of withstanding severe environments are described. The first, a gear tooth sensor; provides a digital output, automatically compensates for mechanical tolerances in mounting and minimizes the effect of temperature on performance. The second, a rotary position sensor; emulates a potentiometer but eliminates the effects of contamination and wear through a non-contacting design.
