The class Re 465 locomotives operated by the Swiss private railway company BLS Lötschbergbahn Limited (Fig. 1) are the result of further development of Swiss Federal Railways' Re 460, the first new class to emerge from the Lok 2000 design concept for main-line locomotives. The converter-fed class Re 465 locomotives with their new drive concept involving independent traction supplies for each axle have enabled enhanced heavy-haul freight service on Swiss transalpine lines. Daily, up to three ‘Jumbo’ trains with a gross mass of up to 3250 t are hauled by Re 465 locomotives over the Swiss Lötschberg—Simplon transalpine route from Basle to Domodossola.
