A method to quantify the tumble-generating characteristics of cylinder heads under steady flow conditions has been developed and its validity confirmed by results in a motored engine. It is based on the design of a flow adaptor which transforms tumble into swirl, allowing conventional methods for characterizing swirl to be applied.
