In this study, both finite element analysis and experimental tests are conducted to explore the effect of the profile of wedge-shaped tracks on the slipping torque for overrunning clutches. The effect of its tolerance on the slipping torque is also discussed. Contact elements are used to model the contacts between rings and rollers in finite element analysis. The friction coefficient used in finite element analysis is estimated from experimental results. The simulation results indicate that the profile of wedge-shaped tracks and its tolerance are important factors in designing slipping torques for overrunning clutches.
