The use of emulator methods in mechanical engineering design is more limited than in electrical and electronic engineering. The concept is to replace a computer aided engineering simulator with a fast statistical emulator built using a designed computer experiment, which can then be used to facilitate optimization and robust engineering design. This case study draws out lessons for application in mechanical design.
