This paper reviews the technology of the tribological components of engines and presents a basic understanding of their design and operation. The availability of this basic understanding is put forward as an essential counterpart to computerized performance analysis programs for components with variable loads and speeds, such as crankshaft bearings, piston rings and cams and followers.
