This chapter describes the main functionalities, architecture, and interfaces of the satellite simulator which is a key component in a ground segment to provide a representative environment for operators to validate their procedures prior to use in real flight and to perform training and simulation campaigns prior to launch. As its name already implies, the satellite simulator emulates the satellite behaviour by sending fully representative telemetry to the mission control system (SCF) and reacts in a representative manner when receiving telecommands. The concept and computational challenge of the emulation of a RISC onboard processor with a CISC based computer architecture is explained. The use of model standardisation is recommended to facilitate the reuse of existing simulator software models among various projects and missions, and the Simulation Model Portability Standard (SMP) defined by the European Space Agency is introduced as an initiative and tool to achieve this.
