With more urbanization and subsequently fast-growing demand for passengers and freight, high speed rails along with conventional and freight rail, can provide energy efficient and fast transportation mode. The rail track being the backbone of the railway transportation system, it needs to be regularly maintained in a safe and fit condition. Even though some diagnostic tools such as track recording cars and on-track machines for maintenance of track are in use, mostly railway track inspection and its fitness are observed manually, which is time consuming, practically difficult for thousands of kilometers of stretch and comes with high likelihood of human errors. In order to address this issue, we present a prototype system, made to continuously monitor railway lines, for crack over the rail, parallel alignment of track and missing fishplate bolts, using suitable sensors. Analyzing the data collected from these sensors, defects and flaws in the railway rails are found. Thus, it can be used to prevent catastrophic events ensuring safety of passengers and freight. This work will certainly help to develop an improved version of the system with features and performance upgraded.
