This paper investigates the influence of the newly proposed powertrain solutions that are currently being analyzed by different companies around the world in the traditional designed vehicle chassis. Vehicles are increasingly incorporating innovative propulsion and transmission systems, this is partly due to legislation, but also due to customer request. The output power and torque of the new systems are increasing. Electric power vehicles for instance got to over 800 horsepower with torque outputs over 1400 Nm, these figures are even over what supercars developed back in 1990 were offering. The high performance of the new systems and the difference in fuel alternatives are rapidly influencing chassis design. The classic chassis are starting to get more and more stressed by these influences and this leads to the need of investigating new materials and structures used in the design and manufacturing of vehicles. Complex structures with geometric efficiency can be used to reinforce the chassis, but attention should also be given to rigidity which may lead to Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) problems and to challenges regarding chassis crashworthiness. Our investigation focuses on the new vehicle electric motor solution, the position in the vehicle and the transmission solution for each case, as well as the influence on the chassis.
