As a kind of high technical marine engineering equipment, icebreaking ships are very important for realizing the development of polar field and making industrial revolution in Chinese shipping industry. The environment of polar sea, development history of icebreaking ships, key technologies and industrialization status of polar ships in domestic and abroad are introduced in this paper. The market prospects and significance for development of polar ships in China are analyzed. The research shows that the lack of basic test facilities such as large ice tank and relevant talents is a major bottleneck to the development of independent Polar engineering equipment in China. It is of great significance to strengthen the fundamental research on Polar engineering equipment and ships, form technical reserves and enhance the construction ability and effective development in Polar field.
