The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) has been developing ITS-enabled road weather services in long-term basis. FMI is the national authority in weather services that provides a wide variety of weather- and safety-related services for all the citizens and society of Finland. Heavy traffic is particularly susceptible to accidents in winter conditions. Accidents involving heavy road vehicles cause operational losses, human casualties, infrastructure losses, and negative environmental impacts. New Finnish-Canadian Eureka Xecs SafeTrucks-project (Heavy traffic safety improvements by advanced dynamics and road weather services) develops real-time vehicle-specific weather and safety services, which are based on the vehicles’ own observations combined with data from the service systems and an analysis of the vehicle's own dynamics. The services require deep analysis of vehicle dynamics, road surfaces, tyre dynamics and effects of degradation and processing a fusion of data from the developed/employed on-board vehicle and telematics sensors, J1939 data, input from weather services, V2X safety systems and connected vehicles. Data is analysed by Digital Twin modelling and communicated to the driver through a hardware system in real-time.
