Cargo ships, which are the basic elements of maritime transport, have an important role in the sectoral emission potential due to non-environmentally friendly fuel consumption. Although IMO’s regulations based on reducing emissions related to maritime transport impose significant restrictions for industry stakeholders, it is seen that the increasing trend of fossil-based consumption will continue in sectoral projections. In this respect, it will be an important step to define environmental impact costs, especially the awareness of fuel-related environmental pollution. To make a potential assessment for cargo ships, the potential of fuel-related environmental pollution caused by a sample ship, depending on its irreversibility, was primarily discussed, and the economic impact assessment was evaluated accordingly in this study. In the analysis, sectoral evaluations were made for cargo ships, and suggestions were also generated for the development of environmental sustainability.
