Abstract Climate change is a major threat to mankind. Acknowledging this, the COP21 Conference in Paris has set a target of maximum 1.5°C temperature rise compared to the preindustrial levels to limit the negative effects of global warming [1]. As transport-related CO2 emissions share account for 23% of the total globally [2], passenger cars also have to bring their contribution. The agreed targets will be transferred into national legislation on CO2 emissions which will become more stringent. To comply with upcoming emission legislation, electrification of the powertrain is necessary. As CO2 reduction potential and cost for electrification go in parallel, powertrains with a lower degree of electrification will gain significant market shares first, with tighter emission requirements pushing for higher degrees of electrification in the future.
