Abstract This paper deals with problems concerning traffic signal control. It is important to reduce waiting time of each car on the intersection, in order to avoid traffic congestion. Authors apply multi-layered fuzzy inference to the traffic signal control. First, number of cars is detected by using sensors set on road. Elapsed time is measured after change of signal from blue (go) to red (stop). Secondly, the degree to change the traffic signal is inferred by using multi-layered fuzzy inference of which the inputs are the elapsed time and number of cars. A performance of a fuzzy controller depends on the fuzzy variables and the control rules. In this paper, the control rules are constructed from expert’s knowledge. Numerical simulations are carried out. A good performance is obtained by using multi-layered fuzzy control.
