The paper describes a connected vehicle application that uses vehicle data from the steering system, brakes, and wheels to identify road surface properties. The data are uploaded to the cloud and fused to identify road properties such as road friction, road curvatures, and distresses and to show their location on a High-Definition Map. Crowdsourcing increases accuracy and keeps the information up to date. By sharing this information through an over-the-air connection to the cloud, other vehicles receive advance notice of potential risks ahead, allowing them to take precautionary measures. Applications range from driver warning to assisted maneuvering via shared haptic control.

This cloud-based service takes advantage of connected vehicle electronics architectures and enables assist functions to increase vehicle stability and improve ride comfort.
