Planetary exploration missions conducted by the United States concentrated on Mars and only a few spacecraft were sent to Venus. The only U.S. spacecraft mission to explore Venus in the 1980 to 2020 time frame was Magellan. Magellan was a very successful polar orbiting spacecraft that reached Venus in August 1990. It mapped 98% of the surface of Venus with high-resolution synthetic aperture radar.
