A key consideration in design of steel-concrete composite bridges with full-depth precast decks is serviceability. Precast deck bridge system has two types of connections, shear connection between steel girder and precast deck and transverse joints between precast panels. It is necessary to apply longitudinal prestress to prevent crack and water leakage to transverse joints, where Design procedure for the transverse joints, assuming full-prestressing, is proposed. To determine the magnitude of the longitudinal tensile stress in the joint, finite element analyses are performed considering the effects of live load, appended dead load and temperature. And analytical studies, considering construction steps of precast deck system and partial interaction behavior, are also carried out to evaluate the effects of creep and shrinkage. The long-term behavior of composite beam with precast decks is investigated through experimental works on a composite beam for 430 days, and their results are compared with those of analytical studies. Judging from the investigations, the loss of compressive stress at the joints is considerably high and it should be a major factor in determining the magnitude of initial prestress. From these results, the magnitude of the longitudinal prestress is suggested, and several considerations to reduce the losses of prestress are also proposed. Finally, the increase of deflection due to the longitudinal prestress is evaluated, and other design considerations are discussed.
