Abstract In the present study, reliability analysis has been performed using the probability concept focusing on the effect of transient flow which can cause the state of system failure in water distribution system. The reliability model for the probability of system failure has been developed to analyze the pipe network regarding transient flow in this study. The probability of system failure has been calculated regarding the effect of valve closure which is a really important activity in operation of piping system. From the results, it was found that the transient flow significantly affects the probability of system failure. Therefore, reliability analysis regarding transient flow has to be performed for the planning, designing, maintenance, and operation of piping system.
