Timely made handover decision between wireless access points (APs) in extended service set (ESS) WiFi network infrastructure with fast moving objects can reduce goodput degradation and interruptions of wirelessly transmitted data and consequently increase the average goodput and decrease the average response time of the network. Handover process has to occur on several layers (e.g. data link layer, network layer, application layer), therefore all these layers contribute to the common delay in the handover process. The 802.11k/r/v standards can be inspected together to effectively improve the handover performance. The handover issue in the data link layer can be mitigated using 802.11v standard to implement network assisted handover for directing poorly connected clients. This work presents recommendations and practical solution with improved handover procedure in WiFi based vehicular communication networks (VCNs).
