Abstract One of the most important concepts in engineering is moments, of various order, of lines, areas, volumes, masses and forces. One can even talk of a moment of a moment. Indeed, the area of a 2-D shape can be called its 0th moment (the lever is brought up to the power of 0). Of these infinite number of moments, the first and second moments are encountered the most often in various disciplines of naval architecture. Here we shall confine our discussion up to the second moments of area, volume and mass.
