EU SENECA project considers two basic design configurations for new European supersonic business jets with two engines and two airliners—the quad-engine and triple-engine airframe integrated platforms. Besides the necessary exploration and optimization for flight performances aircraft noise and emission are the subject of investigation. In assessing noise levels at ICAO certification points the sound propagation and engine installation effects contribute to sufficient value. Semi-empirical and ray acoustic modeling show that their contribution is determined by sound reflection effects from the terrain surface along the propagation path to the microphones at all noise certification points for all acoustic sources in consideration, reflection from the wing surface for the fan inlet noise under the flight path and twin-engine effect of the jet noise for the sideline certification point. The twin-engine effect for the triple-engine airplane designs may reach 3 EPNdB, and for the quad-engine designs—5 EPNdB of the jet noise reduction. The shielding effect by the wing may contribute to fan noise reduction and further increase overall noise, but only if the engine nacelle is installed over the wing surface.
