Abstract In this paper, we propose a system to automatically detect motorcycle riders without helmets. It extracts moving vehicles from the captured images of the road traffic using background subtraction technique. Then, it filters out the blobs of vehicles other than motorcycles. It extracts heads of the motorcycle riders as region of interest and identifies the presence or absence of helmet. We have tested different machine learning techniques with weighted averaging method to identify a head as wearing a helmet or not, and analyzed the results.
